SIGGRAPH '05 -- DESIGN ON STEROIDS...
EMERGING TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW....
(bring your brain and an open mind with you as we preview some of the installations at Siggraph'05 Emerging Tech arena....
I'm off to Siggraph conference in Los Angeles today...my favorite confab in the world. It's a cross-between a world's fair and an amusement park, kind of like next-generation LBE (location based entertainment, info-tainment & more). In preparation, this blogger emerging tech and entertainment author Joyce Schwarz shares some research about Siggraph's 05 Emerging Technology exhibits/demonstrations --only one part of this spectacular show.
"Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union." Frank Lloyd Wright
Siggraph proves this Frank Lloyd Wright quote holds true into the 21st century where form and function are intertwined in a spiritual union of art, science & technology. Here are some links from the Siggraph.org website to the Emerging Technology installations. We'll have an on-site report tomorrow. Plus more info and pix from this year's Cyberfashion Show.
AUGMENTED COLISEUM: The Color-Enhanced Emotion system recognizes facial expressions and controls skin-pigment components using a real-time processor. The installation allows attendees to experience a system that will usher in a new era in communication and movie editing----------> and of course on to ------> The reality we perceive is not a flow of flat images as a digital camera or video camera would output, but consciousness "of things." This project attempts to represent that consciousness. conscious=camera Ecce Homology This physically interactive new-media work visualizes genetic data as calligraphic forms. Wow interactive social experience with a robot! Hi, my name is Joyce what is yours? A highly expressive robotic character, a robust behavior control system, and a host of content-authoring tools combine to generate interactive social experiences with an animatronic character. To see info and pix on the rest of the emerging tech installations at Siggraph go to www.siggraph.org or tune in tomorrow and this blogger Joyce Schwarz will have a first-hand report on Hollywood2020.blogs.com. Going to Siggraph '05 -- as they say -- BRING YOUR BRAIN WITH YOU....CHECK OUT THE LINKS TO THE SIGGRAPH EMERGING TECHNOLOGY INSTALLATIONS: Since the early 1990s, Emerging Technologies has showcased a vast range of new ideas in art and science: music, audio, displays, haptics, sensors, robotics, gaming, artificial intelligence, collaborative environments, medicine, biotechnology, design, entertainment, aerospace, military applications, virtual reality, ubiquitous computing, wearables, hand-helds, real-time graphics, and mobile technologies.
This demonstration of a display-based measurement and control system measures the position and direction of the receiver units by drawing marker graphics. It is very useful for display-based augmented-reality environments.

Color-Enhanced Emotion
exhale: (breath between bodies) In this work, garments are a step in a progression to systems that transparently exchange and express mood and intentions via participant-mediated communication, mixing physiology-derived information with gestures and other non-verbal mechanisms.
Haptic Video Haptic Video provides a precise and proactive approach to transmitting physical skills
High-Performance Stereoscopic Methods for 3D Viewing Using DILA Projectors Stereo will be a predominant mode of digital displays in the future.
The Interactive FogScreen Interesting future applications include walk-through, play-with advertisements in shops or malls; a walk-through screen for trade shows, museums, science centers, or theaters; special entrances to theme parks, etc.
Interbots Initiative: An Extensible Platform for Interactive Social Experiences With an Animatronic Character
i.plot The future of narrative in a project that studies the hidden relationships and contextual emergence of language.
Khronos Projector An interactive art installation that allows people to visualize movie content in an entirely new way
Kobito: Virtual Brownies In Kobito: Virtual Brownies, imaginary creatures interact with the real world. They move real objects, and people interact with them through the real objects. The real objects function as a kind of "haptic interface.
Laval Virtual Winner: Virtual VeeJeying In this virtual interface, participants use lighted gloves to mix images and videos.
The Living Room How does mobile technology change how classical forms of cathartic entertainment, particularly theater and puzzle games, can be realized? How can storytelling, gameplay, and mobile technology be combined to create a successful, coherent, and rich interactive piece
