WILL RIYA NEW SEARCH SOFTWARE REPLACE FLICKR? big discussion going on in the tech blogs and among the techies themselves...what impresses this blogger Joyce Schwarz, Hollywood2020 is the ability for facial and text recognition. Plus this is a consumer application not a B2B app. So much fun and how useful. The founder Munjal Shah muses about Riya enabling us to create a "digital tombstone" of our live. Kewl idea but also great for anniversary celebrations, birthday retrospectives and even for a look back at your career if you're in the graphics, image or editorial arena.
Will Riya Be the End of Flickr?Publish, MA - By Sean Carton. .. Riya recognizes objects in photos—faces, text, whatever—and auto-tags those photos automatically.WWW.RIYA.COM -- new software that helps you sort your images
Note, Riya (who the software is named after) is on the left and Deven on the right.
From the Riya Blog Founder Munjal Shal posts his note on the Flickr question: "Not object recognition Sean wrote an interesting article here about Riya being the end of Flickr. I have one clarification and one thought: Clarification: Riya does not do object recognition - some limited object similairty - but very limited. Our services does do face and text recognition.Comment: I don't think Riya will be the end of Flickr. The power of Flickr is the community building infrastructure it provides. The ability to relate with others and communicate with photos as only a proxy for doing that. Many of the tags on Flickr are more emotive or editorial in nature and a computer is never going to be able to replace that."
