CAPOTE'S IN COLD BLOOD VS A MILLION LITTLE PIECES...."Life is a moderately good play with a badly written third act." Truman Capote
US author (1924 - 1984) http://www.sonyclassics.com/capote/as you enter the site you'll hear Hoffman reading as Capote from IN COLD BLOOD...it's haunting .....against the stark horizontal Kansas skyline....As a journalism grad Ohio University BSJ, this blogger Joyce Schwarz can't help think of the froo froo for the book A MILLION LITTLE PIECES after seeing the film CAPOTE. For the film chronicles how Capote set out to redefine non-fiction with a fiction voice. Yet at the same time this Capote film starring Seymour Hoffman is strikingly a forbearer of our reality television shows that somehow seem more fiction than truth without scripts. Catapaulting the drama and artifice of a Capote against the 'out-there' somewhere starkness of small town Kansas is stunning. UNDERCURRENT OF SEXUAL QUEST and CONQUEST....
The film's director almost erotic withhold of the details of the 1959 killing by Perry the convicted killer until near the film adds an undercurrent of sexual conquest to the mise en scene. At one point Hoffman's Capote is shown nursing Perry back to life after a 30 day hunger strike. Spooning the convicted killer baby food almost serves as a Red Herring that hints that all Capote is going to get from Perry is baby talk and baby steps toward the guts of the action on that fateful night in Kansas. Later in a almost too obvious bookend rhyming sequence to the jailhouse baby food feeding scene, Hoffman's Capote is shown in his NY brownstone pouring hard liquor into a baby food jar and spooning it to himself as he laze's on a chaise thousands of miles but still embedded in the complex web the IN COLD BLOOD quest wove for the author and others around him.
ANOTHER CAPOTE MOVIE --- "INFAMOUS" WITH SANDRA BULLOCK?
I thought I had remembered there was another Capote movie in the works and it appears to be finished sitting now waiting for a release date overpowered by the Oscar buzz and fever of this current film. Here's more on that film ...from a story from Canada-- I haven't seen any stories about it in the US lately....note that they discuss how Capote's relationship with the convicted killer Perry may have been even more entwined than implied in this current film...
