Motorola launched its first online-game-playing mobile phone, picking China for the initiative in a bid to tap into one of the world's top game markets, a Reuters report said. According to Technology Daily News, "Motorola, Inc. announced at the 4th Annual China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference (ChinaJoy 2006) the official opening of MOTOGames, a virtual hypermart for China’s mobile phone users to discover, download, share and enjoy games, read gaming information, make use of a range of community services, and enjoy a superior gaming experience".
HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS COVERAGE FOR MOTO INCLUDES SUCH NOTES AS:
*MOTOGames works with your handset to offer gaming content and trial versions of games for download via WAP or your PC.

CHINA'S GAMES MARKET:Next year, revenue from online games in China will expand 25 percent to 9.7 billion renminbi (US$1.2 billion), said market analyst iResearch Inc. About 83% of China mobile phone users play games on their mobile phones according to Motorola. This is why we've chosen China first," Motorola's Chapman-Banks explained at the announcement.
For as little as 30 yuan ($3.76), users could play the Shanda game using China Mobile's high-speed data service, Chapman-Banks said.
With more than 400 million subscribers and 100 million handsets sold each year, China is the world's biggest mobile phone market.
The Reuters report said China is also a top market for online-game playing, with its online-game sector revenue expected to nearly double this year to around $900 million, according to various forecasts. (Blogger note- not too dissimilar to the iResearch more optimitistic figure of $1.2 B.US. Motorola, which has enjoyed a recent resurgence in China and now commands about 20 percent of its cellphone market according to Reuters recent reports.
