According to the Computer History website: "In a 1949 paper, computer pioneer Claude Shannon said of programming a computer to play chess that “Although of no practical importance, the question is of theoretical interest, and it is hoped that…this problem will act as a wedge in attacking other problems…of greater significance.”
DID YOU KNOW? The first all-computer chess tournament was held at the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) annual convention in 1970. By the end of the decade many of the top programs could play “Expert” chess at the USCF 2000 level info directly from the Computer History Museum website....WHEN DEEP BLUE...Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in 1997, it was the first and only time a World Chess Champion was defeated by a computer.
