The OnHollywood 100 is a power list of the top private emerging technology companies in digital entertainment and media. According to their press release the group was handpicked by the AlwaysOn editorial team out of more than 1000 companies nominated by venture capital firms and other nominating groups. The awards are based on a set of five criteria—innovation, market potential, customer adoption, media buzz and investor value creation. 

Always On reports that this year, with more of the platforms in place, digital content publishers (23% of the list) and consumer services (19%) are taking center stage. Always On says that "more and more, we’re seeing production and content companies geared specifically to digital content; examples include ManiaTV, MobuzzTV, and GoTV. "

GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF THE ONHOLLYWOOD100 is diverse according to ALWAYS ON report which says: When we look at the list in terms of geography, California is again strongly represented, with 54% of companies making their headquarters there. Other parts of the U.S. comprise 34% of the list, while non-U.S. companies make up 12% of the list, with several winners hailing from the U.K. (4%), Israel (3%), and Australia (2%).

ONHOLLYWOOD CEO PRESENTATIONS: Closer look by Hollywood2020 Blogger Joyce Schwarz

OnHollywood is set for May 1-3 in Hollywood at the Roosevelt Hotel. As noted in an earlier post one of the most fascinating aspects of this conference is the CEO Presentations which show trends as to how Silicon Valley, Madison Ave and Hollywood are merging to go beyond Web 2.0. ON HOLLYWOOD: CEO Showcase: Content Delivery Platforms – Film & Video

Aaron Cohen, CEO, Bolt Media  Go ahead and click on Bolt Media and I thought we were going back to the old teen site Bolt which was probably updated for the Web2.0 world. Instead it clicks through to: www.gofish.com. On that site's about section it says: Traditional broadcast TV has its place, but let's face it—there's a lot more happening out there. We created GoFish to help people put their videos in front of the world, as well as helping those with a little time on their hands find the best videos to watch. I'm going to have to check with the OnHollywood execs to see what's up with this and how if at all Aaron Cohen is involved with Gofish???

With headquarters in American Fork, Utah, Move Networks provides Move Media Services to leading broadcast networks, stations, and video publishers to provide them with the best online publishing solutions available for their high-value video assets.

In a recent press release Move Networks announces that it secured $11.3 million in its first round of external venture capital financing. This funding round, co-led by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Steamboat Ventures, closed in December. This latest investment will be used to expand Move's customer base and develop new functionality for the Move Networks server and clients. Move Networks clients already include Fox Networks, E! Online's GlamCam, the new CW Network

.Blogger note-- we headed over to a recent April 26 -- Tech Crunch post and found this: TiVo came along and is helping kill the idea of a TV time slot. The growth of on demand online video has been helping finish the job. Cozmo.Tv wants to create a TV 2.0 by changing the way you consume online video from a random walk to personalized content. Next week at Always On, they will officially announce the new embeddable video widget they’ve been working on for the past couple of months. The widget functions like an online TV, streaming channels of personalized video content based on the initial preferences set by the widget publisher and the preferences of the viewer. HOLLYWOOD2020 BLOG ON LOCATION AT NAB: WHO'S WHO? WHAT'S NEXT?

On location at the NAB in Las Vegas,Hollywood2020.blogs.com, blogger and new media author and guru Joyce Schwarz, met almost 100 of the industry leaders and start-ups.

UK's PACKETVISION Heading to USA.

Packet Vision's network-based personalized IPTV commercials and addressable ads is focusing in on Telco TV delivery to start,but it could change cable and drill down to local for networks in the coming years. Watch for NAB coverage of an interview Joyce Schwarz did with PacketVision (www.packetvision.com) with Tony Hart,director of business development and Richard Scott George, their new general manager, North America and Patrick Christian, founder and CTO.

Shared a cab with Jamie Holowaty, director of broadcast operations for wtnh.com, and talked about World Now and Gary Gannaway who Joyce's known since the 90's when he first launched his company www.worldnow.com.

In the hallway, caught Cynthia Francis, CEO, Reality Digital, www.realitydigital.com, who I know from GSAM work and complimented her on her appearance on the NAB Social networking panel. Rex Wong, CEO, DAVE TV was on the same panel and I caught him on the big screen, here's a pix of that:

At the third largest NAB show ever,more than 101,000 attendees and 1500 exhibitors in more than 1.7 milliion square feet of exhibit space, major names like NAB2007's more than 1.7 million square feet of exhibit space,there were lots of big name media players on hand including: Verizon, Microsoft, Google, MySpace, Amazon, DirecTV, Comcast and others.

MEET THE PRESS/ CNN Virginia Tech i-Reporter Coverage

*Tim Russert: from NBC's "Meet the Press" was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the Television Luncheon. "Meet the Press" is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

Note, it was during this session that an announcement was made to the audience about the Virginia Tech tragedy. Until that statement, many TV execs and producers at the conference were unaware of the drama or the count on the massacre. Meanwhile the CNN 'iReporter' video was getting more than 900,000 views on www.cnn.com -- more than any video has ever gotten before!

RICK DEES INDUCTED INTO RADIO HALL FAME...one of our local favorite DJs and personalities was centerstage at NAB this year: Rick Dees: Radio personality, Dees, best known for his syndicated weekly top 40 show,was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the Radio Luncheon

APPLE's PRESS CONFERENCE GETS LEVERAGED AS KEYNOTE: So popular was Apple's pre-NAB event that many of the popular websites such as engadget.com called it a keynote. Hollywood2020.blogs.com was a bit disappointed because no one covered it live nor was there any streaming video of the event. Hollywood2020 Looks At "The Graduate" & the Class of 2007

Last year in June, 2006, I wrote a blog for Amazon.com looking at how relevant the film THE GRADUATE is/was for the class of that year. I'm repeating my blog post here and would love to get input from my readers on what are the keywords for 2007. THE GRADUATE -- why it's relevant in 2007 -- and what the keywords would be today!

It's been almost 40 years ago(1967) since the film THE GRADUATE swept the nation by storm. The film was so 'right-on' it not only reflected the culture of the times, but many Baby Boomers will say that it influenced culture!

Here's the exact wording of that famous exchange between Mr. McGuire and Benjamin (courtesy of RottenTomatoes.com):

I just want to say one word to you...just one word."--Mr. McGuire (Walter Brooke) to Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman)
"Yes, sir."--Ben

WHAT "PLASTICS" MEANT BACK THEN?

A little research on the web turns up this analysis of the scene by NY TIMES writer Stephen Holden (written back in 1997 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the film):

"The Graduate" didn't invent the use of the word plastic to signify everything phony and superficial in American life. It merely sealed it in, well, celluloid. To sneer at all things plastic was to offer an instant definition of oneself as among the young, hip, truth-seeking cognoscenti locked in a moral power struggle with an older generation of square, corrupt, greedy, warmongering materialists. More than any other touch, its ridicule of plastic defined "The Graduate" as a film about the 60's generation gap."

AND IT REALLY WAS PLASTICS!

Ironically, a post on the film database IMDB.com reports that: Within a year of the movie's release, plastic manufacturing companies became enormously successful. Many people attribute this to Walter Brooke (who portrays Mr. McGuire) quote about "plastics". Brooke himself once told his nephew that he would have invested in plastics, if he had known that the remark would lead to such success.

Another bit of trivia seals the line in history forever as: The movie's line "Plastics." was voted as the #42 movie quote by the American Film Institute (out of 100).

SO WHAT WOULD IT BE TODAY?

In writing my first post on the Amazon.com "PLOG" I wanted comments that would cross all three of my books listed on Amazon -- "Multimedia: Gateway to the Next Millennium" (which is still used in more than 20 colleges and universities), "Successful Recareering" which is still available for purchase on Amazon.com and still gets great kudos from career counselors and economic development centers across the nation and "Tech TV's Cutting the Cord: The Wireless Consumer's Guide".

So that's why I started thinking about what the line would be today if "THE GRADUATE" was replayed for this generation of Gen Y's graduating from college this month. AND although many of my colleagues know that this was my choice for last year also -- I have to vote for "BROADBAND". I know other pundits are voting for "Nano" as in 'nano-technology"  -- meaning small, but I believe "nano-stuff" fever is still a few years-- and perhaps, even a decade ahead.

But "Broadband" is everywhere....more than anything this generation of college kids is probably going to be remembered by marketers as the cross-between "Myspace.com and Youtube.com" affecionados. TIVO just did a deal with Brightcove so that broadband and video on demand shorter features are available on TV. MTV's OVERDRIVE is hot, ESPN is capturing fans with real-time streaming media. The ultimate graduation gift for 2006 grads is probably a mash-up (edited and mixed-up) video of online and offline out-takes. Something gross/something outrageous/something not PC.

Second in the running for the 'word' of the day is no doubt SKYPE -- yep, free phone calls around the world. So that you can keep in touch with your MYSPACE.com list of thousands of pals! Free phone calls to talk to fellow gamers from your Worlds of Warcraft MMORPG.

Free phone calls so your parents don't have to pay for that dreaded mobile bill anymore! (originally published on Amazon.com in 2006).

WHO WATCHES MOBILE TV & WHY DO THEY SUBSCRIBE?

I remember back when I was writing the Tech TV book " Cutting the Cord: Guide to Going Wireless (400 pages, Pearson Publishing)by Joyce Schwarz, www.joycecom.com, blogging at www.hollywood2020.blogs.com that hundreds of VIP's told me that no one NO ONE will watch TV on their cell phone...in fact they will hate watching ANYTHING on a Ravioli-size screen. Yet, the latest info from Comscore shows otherwise. Here's their latest report on why people subscribe to Mobile TV services:

WHAT DO CUSTOMERS WANT TO WATCH ON MOBILE TV?

BLOGGER NOTE: COMSCORE did two surveys 1) of people in general to see awareness of Mobile TV and 2) of subscribers. Not the difference in the respondents in the summary below:

"Overall consumers prefer to watch traditional-style Mobile TV content rather than modified or specialized content. Fifty-six percent of respondents would prefer to watch the “entire TV show” rather than a condensed version and 53 percent favored general content (such as news) over focused content (such as extreme sports programming).  However, of those who currently subscribe to Mobile TV, 46 percent prefer general content to focused content and 43 percent prefer entire TV shows to condensed TV shows.  Those interested in Mobile TV preferred local news, dramas, movies and sitcoms above other content."
