US NEWSPAPERS SHOULD TAKE NOTE....in the Czech Republic newspapers are flooding the market with DVDs that are very low cost, blogged by Joyce Schwarz, www.hollywood2020.blogs.com.
60 Million DVDs distributed in the last year alone
I had not heard of this practice until I was talking with my houseguest from Prague. Wow what an amazing model--maybe the US newspapers should take note of how more than 60 million-- yes, 60 MILLION DVDs being distributed in the last year alone.
According to a report on the Radio Praha website , "In 2007 almost all of the Czech Republic’s national newspapers began offering their readers cheap DVDs. Such movies are not free supplements as you might get in the UK for instance, but are sold separately at an extremely low cost. Pavel Borowiec is the director of the industry body DVD Group: “In other countries such as the UK the system is that a DVD is included with a newspaper and it is part of the price of the paper. The Czech market has chosen to do it another way.”
TOTAL RECALL -- for $2.50 -- really...You can buy the newspaper with the DVD or you can buy just the DVD. According to the Radio Prah article most people just buy the DVD. Blogger note, turns out that all but one of that country's national newspapers got into the act with more than 250 titles sold at a total of 870 milliion crowns.
All but one of the country’s national newspapers has gotten in on the act, with the dailies raking in an estimated 870 million crowns (approx $54 Million)between them in 2007. They put out over 250 titles and flooded the market with almost 60 million cheap DVDs. Compare that to the market for regular, full-price DVDs (which generally go for CZK 300 or 400) – less than three million were bought by Czech consumers in 2007. most don’t, picking up the DVD separately for around 40 crowns
That report we saw said that this promo has not cut into regular DVD sales. However some critics say the copies sold are often poor and that the sound doesn't sync to the picture..but that some of them are good quality.
