Here are a few of the topics that I brought up while moderating the panel on THE WIDGET ECONOMY at Digital Hollywood earlier today, blogged by Joyce Schwarz, JCOM, www.joycecom at www.hollywood2020.blogs.com :
* FUTURE OF WIDGETS -- is via multi-delivery systems -- not just on the Internet -- some of my fellow panelists objected when I maintained that Interface is key to the future of widgets and their use across all kinds of content delivery -- Internet, ITV, TV, IPTV, Mobile, Public Space (closed circuit or Wi-Fi or Bluetooth)
Again and again as I mentioned ITV (Interactive Television) as an example of how the widgets will be used as insertable content adjunct or expantion content on all kinds of screens which empower the user with 'hyper-content' -- multi-levels of content that open like Russian dolls, I was surprised to hear many of my panelists still think the ITV model is tied to set top boxes. It's not. Interface is KEY to the future of content. A couple of cool examples that I found to show you what I mean (and I wish I had those at the panel) include:
SHARP AQUOS NET -- which was launched at CES this year-- here's a Gizmodo video that is a bit shaky but certainly hints at the type of screen I was referring to showing how widgets can intergrate into the living room with ease or be multi-platform.Sharp Aquos Net: Widget TV
Zodiac's Zidget platform/interface was shown at Cable 07-- here's info on it --
Zodiac Interactive - ScreenPlays Article: Zodiac Unveils Interim nbound interactive applications, many of which may integrate Web and other services into a sidebar “Zidget” application that complements the TV experience, but does not interrupt it. Zodiac’s PowerUp authoring tool and presentation engine allowing creators to develop widgets quickly, according to Libkind
START PAGES FIRST INTERFACE VS Social networks -- It seems to me that the start pages become a replacement for an EPG (Electronic Program Guide) You add in your widgets, you RSS in your content and set up any other resources you want ie IM, Twitter etc -- and then just what do you need the Internet for other than research.
Put the mini-version of your Facebook page into the Start page or keep it one layer down if you're over 30. Then your start page loads easily into other devices or can be displayed on other screens in public spaces like hotels, restaurants, bars etc-- where you can watch your content when you want. Empower your phone to serve as the projector and then who needs a carrier deck?
