Just this morning a Los Angeles radio news station reporter called me for some tips for protecting your reputation in the 'Twitterverse' and beyond! Seems that a young college student's tweet to some pals got netizens in a tizzy. If you've been under a rock lately, here's the update!
"Cisco Fatty' Tale Makes Netizens Rethink Twitter bytes & Media snacking!
Since last week's amazing online emailstorm & video parodies & more about "Cisco Fatty' the nickname tweeters quickly tagged one tweeter who tweeted what she herself describes in an interview with MSNBC.msn as "crass-sounding" "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work" . According to a column on MSNBC, MSN.com see skinny on 'cisco fatty story it turns out that the real person behind that 'snarky' tweet was Connor Riley, a UC Berkeley masters degree candidate who was really tweeting about an internship offer from Cisco that she had already turned down.
Bottomline Connor Riley has herself one heck of a good case history on the power of social media for her Info Tech academic paper for her UC Berkeley information management course and techn-savvy Cisco diplomatically posted a blog on Social media linking to their company policies. BUT the nickname Cisco Fatty will long live in infamy online & beyond.
Don't become an urban legend or urban outcast online & beyond
SO IF you don't want to become an urban legend or urban outcast, I suggest you follow these tips for protecting your reputation in the Twitterverse & beyond.
PS If you don't know what Twitter is -- go to www.twitter.com even if you don't have a cell phone you can twitter. Or even better look it up on Google or your favorite search engine.
TWITTERVERSE REPUTATION SAVER TIPS!
1) Don't tweet tipsy! A boss once told me that for a woman a little bit of alcohol imbibed at a company party is like a lightning rod -- you never know when it may strike back! Once upon a time you may have been able to make an anonymous phone call to a past beau but now your tweet becomes public for all the tweeple to see including him or her!
2) TWEET YOURSELF not your company. Be sure your twitter ID is for you not your company. Mention your own prowess not your weak points and don't tweet from a company phone or a company computer! Keep business and personal life separate! Don't mix business & pleasure.
3) Remember what you say online and on twitter stays online! Even if you delete it in your twitter-stream, the google or other search engine stream may keep it forever. The Internet's memory is infinite!
4) Put your best face forward! Candid cameras are everywhere. Before you bare your top in a bar in Cancun this spring break, remember you're one tweet away from becoming the new 'centerfold' on twitpics or the center of attention you never wanted on Facebook forever!
5) Check your reputation weekly. Better that you find out what the Universe is saying about you than reading it on the twitterverse. So search for your name and your twitter and friend-connect site 'handles' on a search engine and on twitter.com/search at least weekly. You may not be able to delete anything negative but you can certainly push it down the list with a lot of positives!
6) Choose your friends wisely. Remember don't talk to strangers can apply to adults as well as kids. Take a moment to check out a friend invite and even if your pals know the person, you want to make sure you want to invite them into your cyberhouse of pals first. There are no prizes for the most friends! And there are certainly surprizes for those who don't watch their online presence.
7) Don't say it, post it or even email it if you don't want to see it on the front page of the NY TIMES ...the newspapers may be folding one after another but the Internet has a 'wayback machine' that zaps you back to 1994 in one click. A flippant remark, a caustic tweet, a too sexy pix may come back to haunt you way after next Halloween!
TWEET WITH CARE....and you can find me @ www.twitter.com/joycecom just a tweet a way. Better say you read this blog so that I can decide if I want to follow you or not! Better still -- give me a link to your linked in profile which chances are rings truer than most friend-connect site info!
