BY Joyce Schwarz, media futurist, www.joycecom.com. As an author and emerging media consultant, I've been looking at next-gen reading and education projects for the past 15 years or so. Kindle didn't hit me by surprise but I am watching with interest as the Sony Daily Reader takes off with deals with Google Books and also with a partnership with OVERDRIVE which allows Daily Reader owners to borrow ebooks from libraries too.
OVERDRIVE -- by the way, I was actually at the launch of Overdrive at the BEA (Book Expo of America) many many years ago and I was in reality more impressed with them than Amazon.com because I felt that ebooks would move faster into the marketplace --certainly into B2B and into education than they have.
If you haven't seen the stories about Sony's Daily Reader -- check out this one and others on Google News today: Straits Times
NOW THE BIG QUESTION I HAVE -- is how all of this ties into content on demand and the next-generation of Web.3.0 and of cours the future of TV too -- I just saw a short tweet on the Qualcomm Portable Personal TV in the works -- and I just know that there is a tie in here also with reading/browsing and discovery which are of course all enhanced by the semantic web. Or maybe I should just call it TIVO-3.0 -- because we're talking about some kind of bots that know what I want to read, watch and listen to (perhaps even simultaneously) any time of the night or day.
In a recent TV GUIDE story -- February, 2009 -- I talked about TV which is tied in with your emotions and senses what you want. OF course many TIVO fans feel that TIVO knows them better than their spouses do. So somehow this is all tied together. As we get that big jukebox in the sky --and somehow the financial resources to download all we want at no charge or a flat rate at least -- books, movies, classes, radio, music etc -- will face THE ULTIMATE CONVERGENCE TEST....
BUT as we walk around in a world with augmented reality -- do we really just LISTEN or do we sense, feel and immerse ourselves into all of it -- or maybe our clones do?
Back in 2003 I did presentations on The future of the book and on what I called then FUTURESCHLOCK -- overload of infomedia...both of these presentations are on slideshare and if you want a pointer to them-- ping me at [email protected]

by Joyce Schwarz, Hollywood2020.net DISTRICT 9 is an amazing cinematic experience -- I'll go beyond saying it's an action-adventure movie. In my mind's eye it is ET for Adults. And I'm not the only one who believes that this Sci-Fi movie is something special. See what the LA TIMES had to say earlier this week:
Variety reports that Oscar voters are gobbling up the hit sci-fi flick. They've only endorsed a few in the past ("Star Wars," "E.T."). Now Variety's Peter Bart reveals a "dirty little secret" — asserting "'District 9' is an absolutely brilliant movie that could easily sneak away with some Oscars.
"Some critics missed the boat on this one (including Variety), but at a packed Academy screening over the weekend at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the film received the most applause of any movie in a couple of years," the trade paper adds. "That’s usually a signal."
sO YOU THOUGHT THE VISUAL INTERFACE FOR THE MOVIE MINORITY REPORT WAS REALLY SPECTACULAR -- YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET -- UNTIL YOU SEE DISTRICT 9 -- as said earlier on slashdot.com the director has "perfected visual neural interface" projection! WOW more about that later and some of the other special effects that talk about the symbiology of how we will communicate in the future and relate to Web 3.0 and the next-gen of the semantic web (Joyce Schwarz, Hollywood2020.net
OFFICIAL SITES: still don't have a clue what I'm talking about then check out these websites and the trailer. Bet now that you see them you realize you have been seeing soem of this movie promo but didn't even realize what it was about or that it was even film promotion earlier this summer!
Here's what the movie site says about the film: "Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came"

District 9 is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp, released August 13, 2009. It takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa. ... Plot - Cast - Production - Marketing campaign en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_9 - Cached
As usual -- wikipedia above -- has some of the best resources on DISTRICT 9 -- including a link to the original short film that convinced Peter Jackson and the studio to fund the project at it's $30 million or so level (a bargain by any means)
SLIGHT SPOILER -- okay okay, I still can't believe it -- but the aliens are all CG -- computer graphics -- I went looking on IMDB for who plays Christopher -- the key alien (co-star) and he's CG. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
Enter the District 9 site as a Human or Non-Human. Upon entering, you will see Multi-National United's satellite view of District 9
by Joyce Schwarz, author and Hollywood columnist, Back in 1994, I coined the word "custom-tainment" meaning that you customized your own entertainment. Later the phrase 'screenager' started to be picked up meaning someone weaned on Sesame Street and raised on MTV. Then of course you heard about Gen X and Gen Y and the Millennials and on and on. But check this out -- now MTV 'skipped a few letters' according to the NY TIMES online article and announced that we're all aiming at "generation P".
At the upfronts (where TV shows are previewed in late sumer,Judy McGrath, the chairman of MTV Networks, introduced yet another moniker for the youth generation, “Generation P,” describing them as “the “young adults who expect to produce and program their own media.”
McGrath is quoted in the NY TIMES as saying, We’re moving with them freely across every screen,” she said. “Our fans aren’t merely consuming his stuff, they’re more invested and engaged than ever.”
Yep, custom-tainment -- only I was about 15 years too early -- or was I??
