by Joyce Schwarz, author and Hollywood columnist, Back in 1994, I coined the word "custom-tainment" meaning that you customized your own entertainment. Later the phrase 'screenager' started to be picked up meaning someone weaned on Sesame Street and raised on MTV. Then of course you heard about Gen X and Gen Y and the Millennials and on and on. But check this out -- now MTV 'skipped a few letters' according to the NY TIMES online article and announced that we're all aiming at "generation P".
At the upfronts (where TV shows are previewed in late sumer,Judy McGrath, the chairman of MTV Networks, introduced yet another moniker for the youth generation, “Generation P,” describing them as “the “young adults who expect to produce and program their own media.”
McGrath is quoted in the NY TIMES as saying, We’re moving with them freely across every screen,” she said. “Our fans aren’t merely consuming his stuff, they’re more invested and engaged than ever.”
Yep, custom-tainment -- only I was about 15 years too early -- or was I??
