What's so funny about this post is that recently, I was doing a seminar for Boeing on how to create a vision board and vision your life/work and I realized I probably better explain "how to flip through magazine pages"
So that the attendees at my workshop would know how to find magazine pictures to put on their vision boards. So I actually took some screen grabs and simulated flipping thorugh a magazine. Now it seems that Google is doing one better than a simulation -- they are actually letting users go to a separate search area (almost like a visual search engine for print) called Fast Flip -- see the link at: http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/sources
HERE IS THE MASSIVE LIST Of print publications that are using FAST FLIP or FAST FLIP enabled or however one might say this. You'll note that the only international publication appears to be BBC NEWS and its kind of fascinating to see TEEN, SEVENTEEN and COSMOGIRL also on the list (scroll down)
MOBILE APPLICATION TOO -- for iphone & Google Android of course. NOTE -- although not mentioned in some of the news stories -- there is also an application for mobile use that appears to be launching today also: '
GOOGLE FAST FLIP -- note that Google makes sure to call it GOOGLE FAST FLIP -- although in many of the news stories I saw reference just to FAST FLIP.
GOOGLE LABS INFO -- here is a link to Google Labs and info on Google Fast Flip directly from their own labs:
Features: Google Fast Flip
Google Fast Flipis a web application that lets users discover and share news articles. It combines qualities of print and the Web, with the ability to "flip" through pages online as quickly as flipping through a magazine. It also enables users to follow friends and topics, discover new content and create their own custom magazines around searches.
See the link to the rest of the info which is in FAQ format on the GOOGLE LABS site: http://www.google.com/support/news/bin/answer.py?answer=161790
GOOGLE FAST FLIP --search intelligence and preference advisor -- not unlike TIVO or Amazon's collaborative filtering GOOGLE FAST FLIP will get to learn your preferences.
FAST FLIP -- Social networking aspect. As noted in Tech Crunch's coverage of the product at it's own TC event: If you do like an article, there is a “like” button, similar to that functionality on FriendFeed and Facebook (the smiley face is built into the logo). You can also easily email any article to a friend. Obviously, as this is Google, there is also search functionality built into Fast Flip
SO JUST TO MAKE IT INTERESTING -- Hollywood2020.net blogger/founder and media futurist Joyce Schwarz (yep that's me) just tweeted the engineer on the projectto ask about ads and cross-platform links. See what I mean (it's another whole blog post really but I'm sticking it in here:
TWEET sent at approx 11:25 PDT: joycecom@marissamayer could Fast Flip launch an advertising app -- zoom in on ads and then click em to go to more info/video etc? cross-platform?
ABOUT ADVERTISING AND GOOGLE'S FAST FLip --EXCERPTED FROM THE fINANCIAL TIMES: It tests our theory that being able to read articles faster means people will read more of them, driving more ad revenue to publishers,” said Krishna Bharat, Google News researcher, in a blog note
SO WHAT IS IT? iS IT A SEARCH ENGINE? iS IT AN APP: -- ACTUALLY www.searchenginelandcom calls it this in a contributor post that just appeared online: The previously rumored Google news site “Flipper” is in fact launching today as “Fast Flip” in Google Labs. But maybe it should be called Google Skimmer because it permits people to move very quickly through lots of visually rich news pages from dozens of partner publications. According to the Google Blog Post:
GOOGLE FAST FLIP Media reader features about 3 dozen publications right now (as of its' formal launch on 9/14/09:
PS...blogger note: To see what a vision board is (go to http://www.visionboard.infoand see the first post.
ZIMBIO. FLIPBOOK & more...anyone who reads online knows that there have been predecessors to Google's Fast Flip -- be interesting to see the patents on this app(reader etc). Ones that come to this blogger's mind are Zimbio www.zimbio.com which is an interactive magazine that has 10 million readers and I believe will also private label it's software proprietary system (I'll have to doublecheck that again!)
Flipbook is another one I'm familiar with and it seems that this category is called PAGE TURNER SOFTWARE or apps.

AMAZON's SEARCH INSIDE FUNCTION
-- almost everyone online is familiar with Amazon's search inside function -- that seems to offer similar capabilities as Google's Fast flip -- so I surfed on over and found that Amazon launched that function on : When did the Search Inside program launch?Search Inside the Booklaunched October 23, 2003
