BACK TO THE FUTURE: seems like a lifetime ago -- and it was 19 years ago when I was asked to fly to NYC to conduct the first workshop on new media for the DGA (Director's Guild of America) BOARD of Directors.
This little newsletter (above) I did back then chronicles the highlights of that fun but challenging trip.
Backstory! Because I had been writing articles on changing careers, the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) West and the DGA West had asked me to give a couple of workshops on how to make $ on the side for directors and writers who were struggling back in '92. I really think they had the idea i was going to tell their peeps how to write for corporate newsletters or how to sell cars.
INSTEAD I gathered together some CD ROMS (remember them that's what we called them back then -- of course some peeps called them CD ROMES :) and I got some videos from Philips Interactive and from other new media firms I was working with and well, PUT ON A SHOW. DGA and WGA booked me in the small theatre at the DGA building and it was a sell out -- so much so that days before they asked me to do the program a second time in the afternoon and I put it on again to a standing room only crowd. I felt not only like a new media EVANGELIST but like this was a REVIVAL crowd. And perhaps it was!
I still have some of the videos I presented and am transferring them to DVD and digital so I may be able to link this post in the future to that exact presentation.
BUT you get the idea -- back to the future literally! In less than 24 hours the DGA in NYC sent me a ticket to come to New York and give the workshop again to their board.
Is it any wonder that I was able to sell to Harcourt Brace AP Academic Division the co-authored manuscript (See pix on upper left ) called "MULTIMEDIA: Gateway to the Next Millenium" with a preface by Brannan Bragga, creator of STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION? Sold it at Siggraph that summer -- and can you believe it's still used in colleges and universities around the globe.
In fact you can still buy it on Amazon.com at this link: http://tinyurl.com/multimediabook
