BrookPark to Honor Marines at IX Center
As you probably know by now Monday August 8, 2005 is going to be another tough day and night in Brook Park, Ohio as thousands of mourners gather at the IX Center in BrookPark, Ohio tonight to give tribute to the fallen Marines(Public to gather for service)from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines Regiment based in this Cleveland suburb.
PROUD TO BE FROM OHIO....
When I heard the news report last week, my breath caught in my throat. I've always been proud to be from Ohio...my family still lives in Parma, Ohio just a few miles from that Brook Park Marines Regiment location..but me-- I'm "across the miles" as they say on those greeting cards you find at Hallmark stores-- way out here in Cali (as the boys would say) Southern California --a place that I day-dreamed about when I waited at the bus stop in the snowy Cleveland winters.
SO CLOSE TO HOME.....yet so far away....
Brook Park --yes, there is a park there....and a bowling alley too.SEE A CLEVELAND CLASSIC -- a CLEVELAND BROWNS BOWLING BALL (photo in this blog from Brunswick of course)...But Brook Park is so close to home that the images of the area flashed before me -- a bowling alley my family and I frequent occasionally -- often on holiday weekends, when we need some exercise after eating too much of my mom's great home cooking, especially those Butterball cookies coated with powdered sugar or those Pinwheel icebox chocolate and vanilla swirls....
REMEMBERING THE LAST PICNIC OF SUMMER USUALLY AT BROOKSIDE PARK... this time of the year it's easy to remember the glory of Brook Park itself for that last picnic of summer with the leaves just starting to turn those glorious autumn colors -- yes, it's even prettier than the picture in this blog in the fall...perfect for a German/Austrian/Hungarian tradition of a "Schpeck Sproat" --roasting a German kind of Pork/bacon over the campfire stove and savoring the drippings onto fresh Parma Bakery Rye bread and sliced onions..with some roasted Kielbasa from the West Side Market on the side...Vernor's Ginger Ale and Hires Rootbeer and some of Charlie's Chips and Pretzels along with some homegrown tomatoes fresh from the vine and maybe even some Piccadilly condiments for the Dads. Add a bit of that famous Stadium Mustard and of course, then we all head back for home-made Strawberry shortcake -- made from Bisquick and topped with freshly beaten cream...hmmm just the thought of the ruby red tomatoes, the luscious and pungent just-picked Peaches...the most savory local sweet corn from the neighborhood fruit stand . August in Ohio -- hot as heck, but the gardens overflow with abundance of goodies....
CAN"T TAKE THE OHIO OUT OF THE GIRL
I often say that you can take the girl out of Ohio but you can't take the Ohio out of the girl....everywhere I've lived from Elyria, Ohio as a summer intern reporter, to Athens, Ohio (as an undergraduate journalism major) to New York City as a budding magazine editor and writer, to San Francisco where I began my marketing career to Honolulu, Hawaii, where I became a seasoned advertising exec, onto Los Angeles where I ventured into the entertainment industry, my Ohio roots remain a unifying factor with colleagues, clients and friends...Cleveland, Browns' football fans recap legendary games years and years after the team left town, always speculating when the team will come back... Ohio University Bobcats pop up everywhere including at some of the top movie studios and, of course. even on network television like the TODAY SHOW. The ever-battling Cleveland Indians baseball team is always good fodder for bar talk--especially, about those season cliffhangers of the past or talking to seniors about the Bob Feller era.
BROOK PARK is just over the city line from Cleveland...so CLEVELAND JOKES ABOUND....but now as you know, CLEVELAND DOES ROCK
and even Urban legends and obscure quotes like "Detroit is Cleveland without the glitter" (see photo in this blog of the Terminal Tower-- it does shine) combine with that awful truth that the Cuyahoga River really did catch on fire once upon a time...probably long before the Brook Park Marines were born but alas...many people still remember that tale....but now thanks to a zany much-loved comedian...
DREW CAREY KNOWS CLEVELAND ROCKS.... thank heavens for Drew Carey because he knows that "CLEVELAND ROCKS" and that Parma is more than a city of Polish immigrants where people eat Pierogi and wear white socks.
Cleveland rocks, cleveland rocks, cleveland rocks, cleveland
rocks (an excerpt from the Drew Carey theme song written by Ian Hunter)cached text
I got some records from world war two
I’ll play ’em just like me grand dad do
He was a rocker and I am too
Oh cleveland rocks, yeah cleveland rocks
So find a place
Grab a space
And yell and scream for more
Cleveland rocks, cleveland rocks, cleveland rocks, cleveland
rocks
TO THE MARINE MOMS AND DADS... no matter what people say about the WAR or which side they take...I want you to know that we all are proud of your boys...our hearts reach out to you....Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force and other parents of service men and yes, women. If I was there, I'd buy you a cup of Joe and a Crueller or two at the local donut shop...instead let me toast you with a Virtual can of our local brew-- Stroh's Beer
Stroh's a popular brew with residents in the Cleveland area...alas, most of the Brook Park Marines slain in Iraq were themselves too young to drink.....
PIEROGI FOR THE CROWDS...and since I hear Parma Pierogi is closed now -- so we can't gather over there after the IX Center tribute,....here's hoping that this funny T shirt brings a smile to your face
click on thumbnail photo to see silly T shirt reading "You can bet your Pierogi I'm Polish".....promise me you'll smile when you see it.
BAGPIPES OR ACCORDION OOM PAH PAH?.....
I suppose they'll play bagpipes at the tribute, but for those of us of Eastern European descent and of a certain age....an accordion polka might be more apropros...here's a funny cartoon I saw that would probably make the guys chuckle if they could see it...let's hope the author doesn't mind me including it here in this tribute-- it just seemed so right for the Moms and Dads and Grandparents born so long before the computer generation of sons and daughters and grandchildren so used to communicating via email ....thank heavens the phone lines overseas are so much clearer and cheaper than in past eras...
click on thumbnail to see cartoon where today's kids mistake an accordion from the attic for a computer from Grandpa's era....
and last but not least....here are a few pix from the good ole Cleveland days when we too were young and full of hopes and dreams and the boys were just a gleam in your eyes....
Ghoulardi was classic local TV host "Shock Theatre" probably a favorite of moms, dads and grandparents of today's military service men and women...his real name was Ernie Anderson and according to the website www.voicehunter.com his voiceovers still live on: Ernie Anderson's career started in Cleveland, OH. The city of Cleveland grew to know the character Ghoulardi in the 1970s. In the late 60s Ernie Anderson moved to Los Angeles where his voice over career quickly showcased Ernie to a national audience. Ernie is best known for his work as the staff announcer for ABC where he voiced opens and promos for such shows as THE LOVE BOAT, THE ABC SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE and MCGUIVER. Towards the end of his career Ernie Anderson was the voice of ABC's AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS which can still be heard today in syndication and in re-runs.
NOTE: Ernie's son is Paul Thomas Anderson, writer/director of several acclaimed films including BOOGIE NIGHTS. MAGNOLIA and PUNCH DRUNK LOVE

CEDAR POINT --- still there and better than every before...
To a vintage postcard of the Cedar Point, the grandparents still reminisce about and remember fondly....before all those new-fangled coasters were built...
AND BACK TO THE BOYSmany born around 1986 when Cleveland was birthing it's ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in tribute to its proud music history
Cleveland's ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME MADE ITS DEBUT in 1986...
That same year -- 1986 -- this tune was number one on Billboard's Chart and it seems fitting for this time....

WHY ADOPT A MARINE? www.adoptamarine.net
I am an “ordinary mother” of an “ordinary young man” that is in the United States Marine Corps; he is my hero, PFC Ryan Rolf. Ryan was deployed to Iraq in February 2004, and continues to honorably fulfill his mission with the MWSS273 at Camp Al Asad Airbase in Iraq . During a recent phone conversation with Ryan, he expressed his concern that there are some Marines that have not received mail or packages from home. (Blogger note, during the I made today to Mrs. Rolf she notes that her younger son is just about to head to Bootcamp and Ryan mentioned on that website is headed back overseas soon after leave).
LET THE TROOPS KNOW THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN:
With thousands of U.S. Troops actively engaged in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the fight against terrorism, we as Americans have an obligation to show our appreciation and let them know they are not forgotten. As days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, reminders from home are welcomed by the troops.
