NEC ROBOT GETS AVATAR PAL TO TALK TO YOUR HOME DEVICES

Personal Robot PaPeRo gets smarter....according to www.pinktentacle.com NEC just announced new tech that enables PaPeRo household robot to connect with personal devices by using a digital avatar that “follows” you ,appears on the screen( on the device) and interacts with you.NEC's PaPeRo robot gets digital . Hollywood2020 wants to know why PaPeRo can't just embed the devices within it's body-- why can't it BE THE TV, BE THE MP3 PLAYER, BE THE CAMCORDER, BE THE DVD PLAYER-- all that metal and no guts? Let's see how smart the avatar can get, previous explanations show that the personal robot is authomomous -- and they show it going to sleep on the couch -- just another couch potato? Most women would not tolerate for another authomomous agent during football games hanging out on the couch! Japanese execs should get a clue! In case you haven't seen the NEC guidelines for their personal robots-- we're reprinting them here-- pretty kewl huh--not unlike guidelines for real people in real relationships -- except the artifact stuff (which I'm sure is really just a language translation goof -- artifacts in our culture go in the attic or are banned to the Goodwill or if worth something-- sold at a yardsale or carried off to the Antiques Roadshow...people generally aren't artifacts? POSEIDON BACKSTAGE STORY BETTER THAN REEL TALE?

POSEIDON -- making of -- more intesting than the final movie? Throughout the whole film all I could think of was -- why didn't I read about how the movie was made in advance-- I had skimmed a couple of articles but it really seemed that the making of the 'Poseidon' is probably more interesting http://www2.warnerbros.com/poseidon/than the movie itself. (Don't miss sthe opportunity on the official movie website, to get the iTunes video podcast). Water is indeed the star -- water, water everywhere-- and debris. Alas, you don't get to know the characters at all before the ship is hit by the rogue wave...a couple of quick scenes and then glub glub you're in the sink. The best article I've seen on the FX is this onePoseidon: cutting edge technology and effects join tried and true ... Of special interest is the "computational dynamics" some new tech that ILM worked with Stanford University's computer department on -- this tech enables the techies to simulate particles of water striking objects, rolling over them, colliding with the back-spray and recombining in a naturally fluid way. MEDIA CAFES FREE PORN & MORE IN TOKYO

MEDIA CAFES ARE HITTING IT BIG IN JAPAN according to reports in the NY TIMES (media immersion pods )and online....and as a bonus the Porn is free-- at least according to a note on a Flickr post.

The "NY Times" story describes these cafes as "equal parts lending library, newsstand, arcade, Kinko's and youth hostel". Here's what the NY TIMES reporter Virginia Heffernan says about her 'pod' experience at one of these cafes: I loved 16-A the instant I saw it. I closed the door, slipped into a low-slung leatherette seat and surveyed the all-you-can-eat tech feast, which includes VHS and DVD players, satellite and regular television on a Toshiba set, Playstation 2, Lineage II and a Compaq computer loaded with software, all the relevant downloads and hyperspeedy Internet. In the nearby library were thousands of comic books, magazines and novels. On the desk was a menu of oddball snacks, like boiled egg curry and hot sandwich tuna.

READING 10,000 YEARS FROM NOW -- WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? HOW DO YOU CREATE A SIGN THAT CAN BE READ 10,000 YEARS FROM NOW? A note in Slashdot.org linking to a newspaper story prompts this blogger to ponder -- what is communicaton? Will people read 10,000 years from now? "The Los Angeles Times discusses the problems with trying to leave a message for generations down the line.

MESSAGES TO THE FUTURE FROM THE PAST: 

One of the first thoughts that comes to the mind of this blogger, Joyce Schwarz, emerging media and entertainment consultant at JCOM (www.joycecom.com) is pictographs. Here is a sample of the pictographs used at the 2004 Olympics in Greece:

PICTOGRAMS IN HISTORY: WHICH SOMEHOW REMINDED ME OF COURSE OF THE UPCOMING MOVIE: DAVINCI CODE:

According to Mesopotamia.co.uk: the earliest writing was based on pictograms. Pictograms were used to communicate basic information about crops and taxes.

The Mesopotamia site notes that, "Over time, the need for writing changed and the signs developed into a script we call cuneiform.   What I find so amazing as a high tech consultant is how much the cuneiform sketch on this site looks like a PDA in a hand! Is that what Apple's Newton used as a prototype?  

The cuneiform evolved over the centuries so that it could be used by various languages to explain not only symbols but sounds of words according to this website.

Further research shows that: About 150 000 Aibos have been sold since they debuted in 1999. OnHollywood Future of TV Panel Via the Web

Watching the "OnHollywood" (http://www.alwayson-network.com) panel about "THE FUTURE OF TV" via the web today was a trip....in fact when I was selecting key words for this blog I realized that participating via text chat with the audience made it seem more like a game than a conference session. It was really fun!

Blogger Joyce Schwarz cached her first chat contribution to the AlwaysOn "OnHollywood" chat session in conjunction with "The Future of TV" panel streamed via the web.

TALK TO YOUR TV, WATCH YOUR PHONE....for decades experts have been telling us that we will talk to our TV in the future and watch our phone and it's finally here -- at least the capabilities. Surprisingly, when this blogger, Joyce Schwarz wrote in the chat session about TextTV -- SMS TV -- which is big in Europe, I got a couple of questions back about what it was. As I wait for Sky Dayton's appearance on CNBC Squack Box show, the one big question I would love to text to him (if we had Text enabled CNBC) is "Why didn't My Space do this?" ...do you think that Rupert Murdock is jealous? Or is Murdock just waiting to see how Sky's new firm Helio does -- and then buy it out too...remember MySpace sold to Murdock for about a $1/2 billion or so.

WHAT'S HELIO? Device or service -- both is the answer  Go to www.helio.com and you'll see two different devices both at retail of $250. Supposedly, Sky Dayton and his wife were in Korea and they saw the advanced 3G devices that the Koreans were using -- and they were jealous. Sky who according to Internet lore (or did he actually tell me once) he started his career running a coffee shop in West Hollywood at some insane young age of 21 or so. Why was he in Korea? His Boingo Wi-Fi firm has deals for hotspots throughout Korea as I remember. So he decided to gather an experienced team together that includes backgrounds with DANGER (teen-device creator of the product better known to consumers as Sidekick rolled out by T-Mobile) and of course execs from SK Mobile, Motorola, Overture and more. And it appears they are all in the Helio 'House' in Westwood (near UCLA) --note it's a house like the MTV House-- not a building or an office-- Sky is 'ever-kewl'...he was MySpace generation before MySpace!

CNBC REPORT ON HELIO -- looks like a phone but does everything except cook dinner-- the equivalent of a Swiss Army knife 

Here's my take on a 'live transcript' of the Sky Dayton interview on CNBC -- did my best and probably got about 80 percent of it....no doubt other media reports will follow !Segment over at 5:55 a.m. -- so 6 minute segment-- not bad for CNBC. They had Sky sitting at the Squack Box table - -not just an interview via phone --very effective new product intro.

5:49 a.m.PST --CNBC  Squack Box (partial transcript) -- part mobile phone, part game player, it's got everything-- just about --inside this thing. FIRST ON CNBC -- HELIO IS HERE -- joint venture between Earthlink and SK Telecom. (The Squack Box team is sitting on the set now playing with Helio devices. )Looks like a phone but lot going on here. Squack Box team shown holding up Helio and it is "playing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" trailer -- they are holding it up -- saying WOW --someone actually says they are "having a good time just getting it open". So Sky what is it? Explain this device to us. We created a new mobile service for young mobile consumers whose lives evolve around mobile space. What is the coolest thing this device can do? Full access to MySpace -- exclusive to Helio -- can be on MySpace 24/7 -- can blog live -- Is this what 18-34 year olds are looking for....yes, they don't want their father's cell phone. I buy into this -- I'm in this demo barely. Fee starts at $85 month -- Sky says 1 out of every $10 is being spent by young consumers on wireless . This is like clothes or a purse or a car-- sit down at table in cafe. "It says who you are" Sky Dayton -- He's getting kidded now by the Squack team...who's coming after you --bigger, faster-- Sky avoids question -- SK Telecom -- 2-3 years ahead of US -- buddy list, sending video to friends. Can send video message to 5 of your friends simultaneously -- up to 10 minutes...don't they have homework...are you competing with iPod with this? We wanted to create a service that was all about communication. Can gift or beg games-- can also make phone calls...built-in MP3 player MPEG4 player-- full stereo speakers...who makes the components inside these machines? Qualcomm --it's 3G tech, Pantech and VK out of Korea . Bringing something unique to the US market. Available now on the website and in 1000 retail locations by end of the year.
