CAA (the famous talent firm Creative Artists Agency www.caa.com) is heading into celebrity sports representation as you may know if you read deeply into the David Beckham story and news from USA TODAY on NFL drafts being repped by CAA also .

INDY 500 USES SPLIT SCREEN ADS FIRST TIME : WATCH WHOLE RACE!

INDY 500 television viewers were able to watch the whole race for the first time courtesy of a new technology/graphic design called split-screen which showed the race on the left hand of the screen and commercials on the right hand of the screen. Amazing stuff! Congrats to ABC/ESPN for this innovation.

DYSON -- keypoints: The Internet will have become more ubiquitous but less visible,most things will have Internet identities ,the biggest issue will be not search but filtering:  fundamental shift in the balance of power towards,much harder for consumers to get free content anonymously individuals. People go on the Web in search of attention; they don't want to give it as much as get it. It's just that the advertisers are not the center of attention ,people judge their own worth by their number of friends (Friendster) or fans (MySpace) or business contacts (LinkedIn). Internet of the future will be much more tightly linked to physical space.

INTERNET NOW PART OF SUPERBOWL SUNDAY WATCH LIST

THE INTERNET IS NOW A BIG PART OF THE SUPERBOWL WATCHLIST ACCORDING TO A RECENT SURVEY

Internet Emerges as an Important Medium on Game Day   RESTON, Va., Feb. 2, 2006 – comScore Networks today released the results of a survey of more than 1,100 Americans’ attitudes and opinions related to Super Bowl XL.  Just under half of those surveyed report that watching the game is their favorite part of the Super Bowl festivities, while roughly one out of four say they enjoy watching the advertisements the most.  For the second consecutive year, the most eagerly anticipated advertiser is Anheuser Busch.

Enjoying the Actual Game is Secondary to Many

While the Super Bowl is the quintessential football game, less than half of respondents (46 percent) claim that watching the game is the part of the festivities they enjoy the most.  Watching the advertisements (26 percent) and spending time with friends and family (18 percent) are the primary reasons behind many tuning in.  Not surprisingly, the survey responses reveal a disparity based on gender, as 63 percent of men report watching the game as the aspect they enjoy most, while only 37 percent of women report the same.  Conversely, women favor watching the ads (31 percent) and spending time with family (20 percent).

Integrating the Internet into Game Day Festivities

On Super Bowl Sunday 72 percent of respondents intend to log on to the Internet, and 56 percent of those intend to do so from a computer located in the same room as the TV used to view the big game.  When asked how they intend to use the Internet on game day, 14 percent of respondents report they will monitor stats and stories related to the game while the same percentage said they will watch/download ads or video clips.  Additionally, 11 percent of respondents said they intend to visit the Web sites of Super Bowl advertisers, reflecting the emergence of the Internet as a complementary advertising channel.

CINEMATIC APPROACH IN NEW NHL MARKETING CAMPAIGN:

He talked about the NHL's new marketing campaign, via Conductor, New York and Santa Monica, Calif., which uses a cinematic approached to reach fans, and also how the league is working to establish a long-term relationship with sponsors and fans “in an era in which there are more [marketing] opportunities than ever and the fan base in all sports is becoming more fragmented. The campaign will use an entertainment-based, cinematic approach to reveal the "true, adrenalin-fueled DNA of the NHL brand, reigniting the passion of existing fans and attracting new fans to rethink the sport," the league said in a statement as noted in a recent MEDIAWEEK report.

NHL ADS IN THEATRES TOO Adweek's September 22 story explains that: The National Hockey League has unveiled its new television promotional spots for the upcoming season, which Commissioner Gary Bettman said will air locally, regionally, on national television, and in movie theaters. The innovative campaign is institutional in nature, depicting "the hockey experience" in a series of five vignettes. The goal of the campaign, according to Ed Horne, president of NHL Enterprises, is to bring viewers "inside the glass" of the rink, to show them the sights, sounds and excitement of the game.

CONDUCTOR (NHL's entertainment and brand marketing company) SAYS THAT CAMPAIGN IS "CINEMATIC STORYTELLING" ...a new way to look at Hockey...

In Adweek, Tim Cotton, president of Conductor, the entertainment and brand marketing company that developed and produced the spots, says the campaign is "cinematic storytelling" aimed at bringing to viewers "a new way to look at the sport." MTV DIRECTOR FOR NHL SPOTS: The NHL TV spots were directly by Sam Bayer, a recent MTV Music Awards video winner.

In September, Ad Rants reported that an ad for the upcoming NHL season which opens with a Chinese philosopher's quote, a bare-chested player and a woman in a bra and robe has been called offensive by Chairwoman of the National Council of Women's Organizations Martha Burk. Responding to NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur's assessment the spot simply portrays the woman as the man's spiritual trainer, Burk said, "That's a major stretch. The woman is a sexual ornament, in my view. It's appealing to adult men while trying to masquerade as something for kids." AD RANTS SAYS: The ad, which is hardly gratuitous and carries the tagline, "My NHL,"The ad can be viewed on the homepage of NHL.com." PURPLE HEART PRINTOUT STIRS UP CONTROVERSY:

The Wedding Crashers website at first made an offer for users to Print out a certificate for a Purple Heart medal off the Internet and pick up chicks! (REALLY NO JOKE). That message was on a web page from the official web site of the new movie "Wedding Crashers".  The site allowed users to print the award with this now controversial message

"To get one of these babies, some dudes have to prove their physical, mental and spiritual strength with great feats of bravery on the battlefield. All you need to do is press the button below." 

PURPLE HEART PAGE FADES AWAY FAST:

The web page was removed following complaints from Congressman John Salazar and several veterans groups.  A statement from New Line Cinema regarding the incident said "We understand the sensitivity regarding the medals and did not intend to make light of their significance in any way".

 

Alas the controversy about the Purple heart print-out stirred up some strange headlines and certainly New Line Cinema was right to remove the page as quickly as they did--a little market research testing of these websites in advance would not hurt either-- a word to the wise...good taste is always in style.....

1911 NEWSREEL OF 1ST INDY 500 AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ONLINE

EARLY MOTION PICTURE CAMERA CAPTURES ACTION AT FIRST INDIANAPOLIS 500 RACE BACK IN 1911

Experiencing the Indy 500 race today is a multi-media adventure for millions of fans worldwide. Electronic choices for following the race abound -- television, radio, satellite radio, blogs, news alerts online, real-time bulletin board posts by viewers and more.

Back in 1911 at the first Indy 500 race, an early motion picture camera was there too. I scanned the web and found at least two sources selling the 1911 newsreel in 16mm print. Note, 1911 is the year newsreels launched in America.

BUYING A BITE OF HISTORY, NO BYTES AVAILABLE

Here are the two sources I found on google, both A-tvideo.com and filmclassic.com are selling the newsreel for less than $100. Note I did not see a digital download of the reel available.
