The Southern California Business Growth Conference produced a big WOW with the entrepreneur reporter Hollywood2020 got to cover the event for us, by Joyce Schwarz, author & emerging media consultant.  

Julie Fink, co-founder of Zolio, at  www.zolio.com  in town from the Midwest so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get a REAL early stage entrepreneur to cover the conference for our blog. Zolio is a web-based resume portfolio tool that allows job seekers to establish their professional indentities.  Zolio offers a free resume builder, work sample management and promotional tools like a personalized URL and widget badge.

Talking about the Capital Zone which was a featured event at The Southern California Business Growth Conference, entrepreneur Julie Fink,co-founder Zolio.com says that the Capital Zone was booth after booth of venture capitalists, angel investment groups and bankers.

...it was like 'heaven' for an entrepreneur....

Julie Fink sums up her experience by saying "As an entrepreneur the Capital Zone was 'heaven', She explains "It is every early stage entrepreneur's dream to walk into a room and see such a wealth of knowledge and opportunity to grow in Southern California. " 

According to Fink, the event was basically a one-stop shop for angel investors, VCs, vendors and entrepreneurs to learn the ins and outs of how to grow business in Southern California.

She explains that many of the people that she met attending the event were working for large companies who wanted to grow their Southern California entities and raise money. "Overall the conferene offered a plethora of business services from legal to IT to accounting." Julie adds that she noticed on the conference badges that attendees came from all over the world to the event from as far away as China and Europe.

MEDIA POST OMMA @ Renaissance Hollywood 3/23 & 3/24 New Players/New Playing Field?

I spent about 45 minutes looking at the agenda and looking up bios on speakers at the OMMA conference sponsored by Media Post in Hollywood Monday and Tuesday of this week. 

 Cory Treffiletti, President/ Managing Director, Catalyst:SF who has been on several of my panels @ Digital Hollywood is the emcee for his conference. Media Post the conference organizers call this OMMA Global because it covers several of their peer groups in these categories. You can see more about the event at: OMMA --registration info

Online Media, Marketing & Advertising: My call on it is that OMMA is worth going especially on Tuesday when I see lots of new players who are creating what just may be a new playing field for OMMA which stands for Online Media, Marketing & Advertising. Because of course it's not just online now that matters -- it's beyond the box or with the new boxes that are coming this year that will create the next-generation of Broadband and Internet video distribution anywhere, anytime & anyplace. Which is something I've been talking about for 15 years.

Monday -- is a good overview for anyone new to the industry with Comscore, Mahalo and several of the top OMMA agencies speaking.

Tuesday -- looks the most fascinating with some of the new players who are taking media beyond the box -- into mobile & next-gen broadband etc.

Predictions on Future of TV & Tech from way back in 1992 by Joyce Schwarz, Hollywood columnist, media futurist

WOW, when people ask how long I've been in the Internet and new media business, I often hear my colleagues say "Joyce Schwarz was in new media before it was new media".

Why because I truly saw it all coming in the future! It was the perfect fit for my varied background in journalism (on the staff of New York magazines), in advertising with major agencies like Foote Cone & Belding as an executive, specializing in new product/company launches and first of its kind products! Plus a masters degree in film from USC's School of Cinema & Entertainment & hands on production experience in the areas of TV, Film & CD ROM promo.

A few people look at me skeptical and ask -- was I really there and I often feel like I need to PROVE I WAS around in 90 and by 92 was not onlly writing about the new tech but producing and hosting a cable TV SHOW called "TURNED ON HOLLYWOOD" about Hollywood meets Silicon Valley in Los Angeles.

Sorting through some old files, I found a newsletter I had started back in 1992 called LA INSIDE/OUT and I saw that it talks about the first TV SHOW of TURNED ON HOLLYWOOD and gives some fascinating stats. The newsletter and show both had their debut in June, 1992 just after I conducted the very first workshops on new media for the DGA (Directors Guild of America WEST) and then was flown to NYC to do another private workshop for the DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA EAST.

The Marine parents site is an example of a powerful online social networking group that really gets involved in real life too. We heard about this new effort and want to support it here with our blog. Since we were just on the panel at Las Vegas with the Arts & Entertainment A&E website, we also note that this could make a heartwearming segment for TV if you're in the biz....maybe even a reality series if it was done right so that it is encouraging and gives us some behind-the-scenes info on what's happening.

Operation PAL™: Prayers and Letters is a new project started by MarineParents.com, Inc. in support of our active duty Marines who have been injured or become ill while in combat or upon return from combat.

If they are in one large envelope, each card/letter does NOT need additional postage. We'll sort them here and get them to each of the Marines.

YES, you can write and pray too-- you don't have to be a Marine Parent!

So go ahead write a note now-- saying how much you appreciate their hard work and support them as they are on the mend. I've got a few holiday cards left so I'm going to use those to wish them a good year. The guys and gals will probably chuckle when they get the cards -- they'll know they are left over cards and realize that is exactly what their own mom or dad might do to just get the message out...no need to run out and buy new cards...or just write a note. The address to send them is below-- one address and they will forward the cards. What to say -- just what your heart tells you...and of course total 'props' to them as they heal!

BAH HUMBUG AOL -- DOESN'T ALLOW YOU TO SEND HOLIDAY GREETINGS TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK?

BAH HUMBUG AOL.... for the past 12 years I've been an AOL member-- and yes, people laugh at why someone so into tech uses AOL...because I think they have the best email service in the biz...

Click on JPEG and you'll see the snail mail card I sent to my clients and colleagues...at least I don't violate TOS by sending snail mail???

And I love the AIM (instant messaging). That's it plain and simple and I like keeping the same email address I've had since the beginning-- in 3 physical moves to different houses in 12 years I've kept that email address and used the same password for 12 years too...at least something has stayed the same in my life. So tonight I tried to send out greetings to my AOL address book and guess what sending 18 separate emails that each copied about 10-15 people -- well that seems to violate the AOL TOS... They just cut you right out-- yep cut off...and I bet if I wasn't paying the $9.95 pr month ...well I probably would still be trying to get them on the phone. If you keep AOL you almost have to pay $9.95 to get some service online and via phone...otherwise -- good luck to you...anyway-- you get the idea. So I'm going to go over to American Greetings AG.com and see if they will send my greetings for me...too bad my address book is at AOL..see I should have used Outlook after all RIGHT?
