WHO WATCHES MOBILE TV & WHY DO THEY SUBSCRIBE?

I remember back when I was writing the Tech TV book " Cutting the Cord: Guide to Going Wireless (400 pages, Pearson Publishing)by Joyce Schwarz, www.joycecom.com, blogging at www.hollywood2020.blogs.com that hundreds of VIP's told me that no one NO ONE will watch TV on their cell phone...in fact they will hate watching ANYTHING on a Ravioli-size screen. Yet, the latest info from Comscore shows otherwise. Here's their latest report on why people subscribe to Mobile TV services:

WHAT DO CUSTOMERS WANT TO WATCH ON MOBILE TV?

BLOGGER NOTE: COMSCORE did two surveys 1) of people in general to see awareness of Mobile TV and 2) of subscribers. Not the difference in the respondents in the summary below:

"Overall consumers prefer to watch traditional-style Mobile TV content rather than modified or specialized content. Fifty-six percent of respondents would prefer to watch the “entire TV show” rather than a condensed version and 53 percent favored general content (such as news) over focused content (such as extreme sports programming).  However, of those who currently subscribe to Mobile TV, 46 percent prefer general content to focused content and 43 percent prefer entire TV shows to condensed TV shows.  Those interested in Mobile TV preferred local news, dramas, movies and sitcoms above other content."

WHAT IF YOU WERE LIVING UNDER A ROCK and didn't know about TIVO or DVR's, what if you didn't realize that mobile phones could play regular TV, what if you didn't know that TIVO had a product called TIVO2Go? Take a look at this development and you'll see what I mean. For years I've been talking about mobile handsets that would have instant one click buttons to weather, traffic etc...well, this shows how search is going to change when it's built in and well, you don't have to search for it anymore!

CBS LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE DIVISION ---TV2Go!

According to their press release, CBS Corporation (NYSE: CBS) has created CBS Mobile, a new platform within CBS Interactive dedicated to building and growing the Company's mobile operation across its various properties, including CBS Entertainment, CBS Sports and CBS News.

CYRIAC ROEDING, NEW EVP CBS MOBILE

Cyriac Roeding, who has served as Vice President of CBS's wireless efforts since 2005, has been named Executive Vice President of the newly formed division. The announcement was made today by Quincy Smith, President, CBS Interactive, to whom Roeding reports.

"The creation of CBS Mobile within CBS Interactive further positions us to occupy the audience and advertiser interfaces of the future," said Smith. "Mobile is a huge opportunity for CBS and we are delighted to announce the world class team and partners Cyriac is assembling.

Sellinger Now VP CBS MOBILE:

At the same time, Roeding has announced the promotion of Jeff Sellinger from Director of CBS Wireless to Vice President of CBS Mobile. In his new role, Sellinger, who will continue to report to Roeding, will oversee the operational activities of CBS's various mobile initiatives.

FLASH MOBS/FLESH MOBS -- BIGGEST US MOB?

Wow we must have been looking for groundhogs or something...because we missed the largest flash mob/flesh mob ever organized in the US earlier this month, by Joyce Schwarz, JCOM, www.joycecom.com, blogging at www.hollywood2020.blogs.com. Yep, according to www.wikipedia.www.textually.org, the flashmob at the UC Davis Bookstore ATMs on Feb 1, 2007 may have been the biggest in US history to date. Supposedly  organized by Zack Crockett through Facebook.com it attracted more than 1000 people.  At noon a group of people appeared, cheered, applauded, and chanted "ATM! ATM! ATM!". What's a flashmob?  flash mob describes a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disperse. They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks.

CULTURE JAMMING: enter the world of 'culture jamming":

culture jammers, are counter-culture groups or individuals , who disrupt messages and sometimes advertising by major corps and brands with what they call 'techno-activism" -- whole newspeak isn't it? Think ad parodies, jammed radio shows, defacing billboards, fake newspaper ads, and imitation websites...and all of these people often use 'subvertising' and many are called 'subvertisers" when they create ads or promos that are fake or are parodies of real ad campaigns. The culture jamming lies somewhere between art, activism, and business

NEW ROLL-OUT SCREEN -Phone --like MINORITY REPORT!

REMEMBER THE WIDE ARRAY OF READING DEVICES THEY depicted in the movie MINORITY REPORT? I sure do, blogged by Joyce Schwarz, www.hollywood2020.blogs.com. As an emering media & entertainment analyst and consultant (www.joycecom.com), I've been following the future of books and handheld devices for the past 17 years-- yes, since 1990. Back then I just knew that the vision of how we read and where we read would change!

Polymer Vision, a spin-out of Royal Philips Electronics is showing off the first-hand held phone/device that has a rollable/pull-out screen. It does look like something from MINORITY REPORT, the movie doesn't it?

FUTURE OF THE BOOK:

Back in 2002, I did a keynote presentation at the Waterside Publishing Conference in Berkeley California about the future of books. I was told by the organizers not to include info on typical 'book readers' which were not selling at the time. So I went and investigated the kinds of devices that were pictured in MINORITY REPORT and used for 'reading' in that movie. Just my luck some of the props were on sale on eBay so I was able to get some great shots-- take a look at some of these Hollywood depictions of how we will read books and info in the future:

Look at this 'reading device' prop from MINORITY REPORT -- I remember when it was on eBAY -- not even functional it was very pricey! Can you imagine what it would cost in real life-- it looks like you wave the wand type device and either LED info is displayed or it talks to you in audible speech? Anyone remember how it was used-- or if it was used in the movie?

This is a mag pouch from MINORITY REPORT and I don't think they mean magazine in the reading sense of the word either?

WOW THE EAR PHONE IN MINORITY REPORT looks almost old-fashioned now compared to new bluetooth devices? What do you think?

According to their website, the rollable display lets you read a regular newspaper and books. It can be delivered through their standarad mobile network. But of course you'll need a SIM card to update the newspaper and then store the memory which will need to be at least 4 Gigs in the first models. So the phone/device is smart and does not just display downloads-- very interesting huh?

THE new mobile device means instant access to personalised data, e-mail, news, information feeds and location sensitive maps on-the-go. The servicew is an optimized combo of  cellular (EDGE/UMTS) and broadcast (DVB-H IP data-casting). Plus there is a mini-USB slot for PC and wired/wireless broadband data connection.

WHAT WILL IT PLAY? According to the press report we saw, it will display superior text and graphic content, and also download and play music, audiobooks and audio podcasts.

SINGLE HANDED NAVIGATION AND CONTROLS via an innovative touch sensitive LED user interface, and simple software to help you manage and access relevant and personalized high value content.

WORKS 10 DAYS ON BATTERY -- REALLY -- this seems almost impossible and I probably should have led with this info it's so stunning -- but here is the real gotcha! --With the extremely low power consumption of the display, the new device will deliver an exceptional 10 days of average usage time between battery charges.  Telecom Italia will exclusively market the innovative terminal in Italy.
